How to use this calculator
- Compare amounts for the same person or household.
- Enter monthly rent, excluding additional expenses.
- Enter additional housing costs in their own fields: they appear in a separate ratio.
An example to check the calculation
Hypothetical example: €900 rent on €1,800 income is 50%. With €100 of additional housing costs, the second ratio is 55.56%.
The formula, in plain sight
Rent (%) = monthly rent ÷ monthly net income × 100
Total housing (%) = (rent + utilities + building fees + other housing costs) ÷ income × 100. No disposable balance is calculated because other living expenses are missing.
What it means and what it does not
No percentage alone determines housing affordability. We apply no universal threshold and do not reproduce the European total housing cost overburden indicator.
