How to use this calculator
- Select two months from the same official series; the final month cannot be earlier.
- Enter the amount for the initial month.
- For income comparisons, add the final amount to distinguish nominal and real change.
An example to check the calculation
Fictional mathematical example, not INE data: if an index rises from 100 to 125, €1,000 becomes equivalent to €1,250. If income only rises to €1,100, the real change is −12%.
The formula, in plain sight
Equivalent amount = initial amount × (final index ÷ initial index)
CPI change = (final index ÷ initial index − 1) × 100. Nominal change = (final income ÷ initial income − 1) × 100.
Real change = ((final income ÷ initial income) ÷ (final index ÷ initial index) − 1) × 100. Simply subtracting the two percentages does not give this result.
What it means and what it does not
The all-items CPI represents a national statistical basket, not your personal spending. This tool does not update rental contracts or predict property prices. Only months with final indices are available.
