How to use this calculator

  1. Estimate monthly expenses using your own figures.
  2. Separate upfront payments from the cushion you want to retain after moving.
  3. Enter available savings and your monthly contribution. Adjust the inputs and recalculate to compare scenarios.

An example to check the calculation

Hypothetical example: €1,400 upfront plus three months of €1,000 expenses gives a €4,400 target. With €1,000 saved and €400 added monthly, you would need nine months.

The formula, in plain sight

Target = upfront costs + (cushion months × monthly expenses)

Remaining = maximum of 0 and (target − savings). Months = remaining ÷ monthly saving, rounded up. If already covered, the time is 0; if money is missing and contributions are zero, no time can be calculated.

Monthly headroom = net income − monthly expenses. The cushion is an extra reserve for after moving in: we do not automatically add another first month.

What it means and what it does not

Enter the first month once in upfront payments; the cushion covers later months. The deposit is an editable estimate, not a claim about contractual requirements. No returns, grants or price changes are assumed.
