Gross and net: compare like with like

Editorial draft awaiting owner review. Excluded from indexing and the sitemap.

Your contract amount and bank deposits answer different questions. Distinguishing them prevents conflicting budget and salary comparisons.

Two amounts, two uses

Gross pay is before employee tax withholding and social contributions; net pay is what remains after those deductions. Budgets use net income. EPA salary deciles use gross main-job earnings. This site does not convert gross to net, which would require more tax and employment information.

Extra payments change the monthly picture

Fourteen salary payments cannot be compared directly with a statistic dividing annual gross by twelve. Hypothetical example: 14 equal gross payments of €1,500 total €21,000 annually. The comparable monthly average is €1,750, not necessarily your actual payslip amount.

A check before calculating

Find annual gross main-job earnings, check whether extra payments are included and select annual. If employment lasted only part of the year, do not treat that total as twelve months: the statistics have specific rules for temporary jobs. Consult the methodology before interpreting your interval.
